Prague Spring 50th Anniversary - RADIO

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

On 20-21st August Czech Radio and the City of Prague will commemorate the events of August 1968. During the two days a series of commemorative and cultural gatherings will take place throughout the city. A concert organised by Czech radio and Prague’s Municipal Authority will be held in Wenceslas square on 21st of August at 8pm.

Pope Francis visits Ireland - World Meeting of Families

DUBLIN, IRELAND

In a statement the Irish Catholic bishops said “Pope Francis, who is 81 years of age, will arrive in Dublin on Saturday, August 25th, and will take part in the ‘Festival of Families’ in Croke Park, describing the event as a “faith-based cultural concert”. “The next day, Sunday August 26th, Pope Francis will be the chief celebrant at Holy Mass in the Phoenix Park and this liturgy will bring to a conclusion the World Meeting of Families 2018,” the bishops added.

75th Venice International Film Festival

VENICE, ITALY

The star-studded 75th edition of the Venice International Film Festival runs at from 29 August through September 8 this year, with films featuring international stars including Mel Gibson, Vince Vaughn and Ryan Gosling being showcased. Damien Chazelle’s “First Man” has already been set as the opening film at the festival. This year’s competition jury is led by Guillermo del Toro, who won the Golden Lion at the festival last year with “The Shape of Water".

YEMEN PEACE TALKS

Geneva, SWITZERLAND

UN envoy Martin Griffiths confirms Yemen peace talks. Negotiations are due to begin at the UN in Geneva on 6 September. The talks will be a potential breakthrough to resolve a conflict that has claimed over 10000 lives and left millions on the brink of starvation. A joint Saudi and United Arab Emirate coalition has been fighting to win back control of Yemen from Iran-backed Houthi rebels since March 2015. Yemen has widely been described as the world’s greatest humanitarian crisis.

Austrian EU Presidency - Informal Meeting of Heads of State or Government

Macedonia Name Change Referendum

SKOPJE, MACEDONIA (FYR)

Macedonia's referendum to change the country's name to Republic of North Macedonia would pave the way for the former Yugoslav republic to join NATO and the EU. The change could resolve the dispute with neighbouring Greece. Athens cannot accept its neighbour being called Macedonia as it has a northern province with the same name and is concerned of territorial ambitions. The proposed change has triggered protests in both countries. The vote is to take place on September 30.
