Missing Saudi Journalist


Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, an editioralist for the Washington Post and a critic of the new Saudi government has been missing since he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October. According Turkish press, he is presumed to have been murdered inside the consulate. Saudi Arabia on Sunday dismissed threats of sanctions over the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi and vowed the kingdom would retaliate against any threats.

EU Council Summit + Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM)


The October European Council will focus on migration and internal security. It will be followed by the Euro Summit in an inclusive format. On 17 October, the 27 EU leaders will meet at the European Council (Art. 50) for a working dinner, and will review the state of the negotiations with the UK. The 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit will take place on 18-19 October 2018 at the European Council Europa building in Brussels, Belgium.

Brazil Election Final Round


Far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro will face leftist Workers's Party candidate, Fernando Haddad, in an October 28th run-off vote for the presidency of Brazil. Bolsonaro came close to an outright victory in the first round, receiving 46 percent of the vote; he needed 50 percent to avoid the runoff. Haddad finished well behind with 29 percent. Bolsonaro is a divisive figure who has alienated large portions of Brazil's diverse population during the campaign.

US Midterm Elections


The midterm elections will be held on Tuesday, November 6th, 2018. All 435 seats in the United States House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the United States Senate will be contested. Democrats are hoping to capitalize on an anti-Trump sentiment among their voters and to energize the number of female and minority voters. Republicans hope to maintain the strong showing made in the 2016 Presidential election and maintain control of both houses of Congress.

25th EPP Congress Helsinki 2018


The European People’s Party (EPP) will hold its Congress on 7 and 8 November in Finland. 100th Anniversary of WW1 Armistice


World leaders will travel to Paris to participate in a November 11 commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. Armistice Day marks the signing of an agreement between U.S. allies and Germany at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918 in France. The agreement brought an end to four years of fighting in Europe.
